Facebook: Discussion

facebook-logoFacebook is becoming (or already has in some cases) one of the most clicked websites and “chore”  in our day-to-day activities. For some of us, it’s like a daily ritual and in some extreme cases, some feel compelled to check it every couple of minutes.  The North Hill Leos (since it consists of youth) have been keeping up with the latest technology by doing things like communicating through emails, holding msn committee meetings and creating a Facebook group. The problem I’m finding though is that there is a severe lack of maintenance and proper use of our resources.

Our Facebook group is unupdated and unchecked, even though it’s just a few clicks away from our profile page or maybe some other person’s you are snooping on. I was wondering how our members feel about us posting photos on the group where the public could see.  The benefits of this is to help raise our club’s visibility. A problem I can see arising though is whether people feel like their privacy is compromised if we upload our event photos.

What are people’s opinions about uploading photos of our club?  What other things can we use our Facebook group for? (Reply to the post and discuss! :))

Voting voting voting: Message from the President

voteWe are going to be electing our new executives (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) very soon. For those who attended the meeting, I think I caused some confusion while discussing this. So I will try to clarify what was said here.

I hope our two projects so far, Sight Night and Caroling, has sparked some interest in you to play a bigger part in this club. Honestly, I do not know of a club with more flexibility to allow a group of youth do whatever they can think of to help give back to the community and help people around the world. When in the right hands, this club can seriously make a significant different in people’s lives. If you feel great about what we have done and are planning to do, then that’s good. If you feel we could do so much more, why not be the one to make that change? You might not be able to change the world, but you can definitely change someone’s life. With that said, I feel I need to look no further for a better reason to become more involved with the Leos club.

frustratedMany of you may have heard me rant about the stress and responsibility that can come with the role of a president, but at the end of the day, when I sit down to think about it, I am glad I was given this opportunity to make a difference. Together, we helped more than a 1000 people in our Sight Night Project and we convinced at least 500 people to donate their glasses tsmiling-seniorso our cause.  We brightened 30-some seniors’s day at the Royal Park Retirement home. I can still recall the one senior who stood up with a great big smile at the end and thanked us all for coming and caroling for them and the seniors who asked us to come again next year to sing for them again.

bondEvery time we came together to work on project, whether it be slaving away at painting our eyewear collection boxes, or practicing for the caroling event (no matter how embarrassed we felt), I felt I discovered something new about each and every one of you; a side of you I would not have normally seen. I will treasure these big and little moments forever.

You don’t need to be the president, or any executive position to experience this, but it will ensure that your experience will be maximzed.  In my first two years in the club, I was just a regular member. I attended my meetings, I occasionally helped out on projects, but I never really felt I was part of it.  So what changed?  By taking on a role in the club, I was bound by responsibilities that forced me to realize how much one could do if you put the effort and thought into it.  So once again, I hope you will consider running for any position.

For now, that’s enough with the personal reflections before I get teary-eyed.  gavel

Now to the rules:

  • A new president must be elected each year
  • You must have been in the club for at least one year (ie. 2007) to run for president (because you need to be familiar with the club)
  • Any member (new and old) can run for any other executive position
  • Vice president, secretary and treasurer can be re-elected for the same position
  • You must be nominated first to be considered (you can nominate yourself or someone else, but make sure you ask the person first). Email your nominations to calgarynhleos@gmail.com or give me a note at the meeting.
  • There will be 3 readings. (First reading on Mar. 3rd, second on Mar 17th and third on Apr 2nd)
  • The latest nominations can be submitted is on Mar 3rd (Revised date!)
  • Election date: Apr 2nd. (Revised date!)

For the roles and responsibilities of each executive position, please refer to the Leo handbook.  (I will post a link later).

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t be afraid to ask me!

Jan 20 Meeting: Highlights

exclamation1

A couple of important topics were discussed at our January 20th meeting. Not everyone could make the meeting so I thought I would just summarize the important points below. Please read!! (I have uploaded the minutes to the Yahoo group as well).

Low Vision Project (Gina):
Originally, we were going to collaborate with the CNIB for a people-based project, but because their volunteer coordinator resigned in January, they are unable to accommodate us currently. So we are looking into other ideas like helping out at the homeless shelter. Everyone should have gotten a email from Gina (the chair of this project) regarding this. Let me know if you didn’t receive the email by replying to this post. (Or email calgarynhleos@gmail.com). Please kindly let Gina know whether or not you will partake in this project.

Skate -a-Kid-to-Camp (Chris):

Refer to pdf.

Sight Awareness Campaign (Shannon):

Due to the recession in the economy, we are considering a more feasible project.  Originally, the plan was to contact optometrists across the city to donate a portion of their profits on a set date to vision related causes, but with the current situation with the economy, we think this idea might not work as well.  While a good idea, I guess we will have to wait for a better opportunity. We are in search of a new project at the moment. Please refer to the minutes for the full details on this one.  If you have any ideas, please reply to the post and let us know!

Peace Posters (Raymond N.)

It’s that time of the year again where we start our planning for one of our biggest annual projects. At the meeting, a committee sign-up sheet was passed around. For those who weren’t at the meeting, but are interested on signing up for the committee to help with the planning, please email Raymond Nguyen or reply to the post and let us know! (I won’t post his email here to avoid his email from getting spammed by bots, but you can find his email in our club contact list on our yahoo group under files.)

Canmore Convention 2009

On January 17th, 2009, 5 Leos (Aaron, Amy, Chris, Michelle and Ming) went to Canmore to bear the flags for the opening ceremony of the Lion’s Convention in Canmore. It was so hard waking up so early (as early as 4:45 to as late as 6am) when it was still pitch black but we made it there safe and sound. The scenery was beautiful as we drove past the mountains that glowed with a thin layer of sunlight outlining its shape against the dark blue sky. We had a wonderful time there as we got a chance to talk to Lions from different parts of the city.

The beginning of 2009

Welcome back to a second term with the North Hill Leos.  On Tuesday, January 20th, we will have our first meeting of 2009.  These next few months, especially May and June will be especially busy.  I will try to have a timeline prepared for the meeting to let you see what the rest of the year will look like. On January 6th, 2009, we had our Initiation Ceremony, where we invited PDG Lion John Watson to initiate our new Leos. Congratulations to Aaron Mah, Alan Leung, Michelle Pak, Ming Wo, Nolan Woo, Raymond Nguyen and Raymond Van, who are now officially Leos!

We also had Lion Bernie Gribben come, who presented pins and certificates to our Leos for a great job on the Sight Night project.  Over 1000 pairs of glasses were raised! An article about our Sight Night project was also published in the Lion’s monthly newsletter in January.  Click here to see it (pg. 6).
